“We Support Peace Efforts, But Governor Bago Must Also Address Other Challenges” — Ustaz Asadul Islam

Islamic cleric Ustaz Asadul Islam has reacted to recent remarks by Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago on religious preaching, expressing support for efforts aimed at maintaining peace while urging the government to give equal attention to other pressing challenges facing the state.

The cleric's response followed Governor Bago’s warning against religious sermons and gatherings that promote hatred, extremism, or division among residents. The governor stated that places of worship found inciting hostility between religious or ethnic groups could be shut down, while those responsible could face arrest and prosecution.

Speaking in a video circulated on social media, Ustaz Asadul Islam commended the governor’s commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence and tackling extremist tendencies. However, he argued that the state government should also intensify efforts to address insecurity, education, healthcare, road infrastructure, and economic difficulties affecting residents.

According to the cleric, peace-building initiatives are important, but citizens also expect government action on issues that directly impact their daily lives and well-being.

He further called for a balanced approach to regulating religious activities, stressing that policies should protect public order without undermining legitimate religious expression. He maintained that any measures taken should be applied fairly and should not be perceived as targeting particular religious groups or schools of thought.

Ustaz Asadul Islam also urged members of different Islamic sects and religious communities to avoid inflammatory statements capable of deepening divisions, emphasizing dialogue and mutual respect as key ingredients for sustaining peace.

Addressing fellow religious leaders, the cleric encouraged scholars to maintain independence in their engagements with political leaders and continue to provide constructive guidance on matters affecting society.

Governor Bago’s comments have generated widespread discussion across social media and religious circles in Niger State. While some stakeholders have welcomed the governor’s stance as a necessary step toward curbing hate speech and preserving public order, others have called for caution to ensure that measures aimed at maintaining peace do not infringe on religious freedoms.
