The Nasarawa State Government has announced plans to privatise and concession public abattoirs across the state as part of efforts to improve meat hygiene, modernise facilities, and strengthen operational management.
Commissioner for Agriculture, , disclosed the initiative during a ministerial briefing in Lafia, stating that many abattoirs across the state's 13 local government areas are in poor condition and require urgent intervention.
According to the commissioner, the proposed model will attract private investment for the construction and upgrade of modern slaughter facilities, including boreholes, cold rooms, and waste treatment systems, while the government maintains oversight through veterinary inspections and enforcement of hygiene regulations.
He said the government would continue ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections of animals to ensure only healthy and safe meat reaches consumers.
Tunga added that butchers would receive training on modern hygiene practices, including the mandatory use of protective clothing and regular sterilisation of equipment.
The commissioner noted that the initiative is expected to create employment opportunities for youths across the state while enhancing public health and food safety standards.
Also speaking, Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, , urged residents to protect public projects and facilities in their communities.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of to completing ongoing projects across the state before the end of its tenure in 2027.
