Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has assured that the long-awaited Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai Teaching Hospital will be completed, a move aimed at strengthening medical education and healthcare delivery in the state.
Governor Bago gave the assurance while receiving 41 medical students of IBBU Lapai currently undergoing clinical training at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, under a special admission arrangement.
According to the governor, the completion of the teaching hospital will enhance the training of medical and health-related professionals within the state and provide the necessary infrastructure for clinical education at IBBU Lapai.
He congratulated the students on reaching a significant stage in their academic journey and encouraged them to remain focused and committed to their studies. The governor also urged them to serve as worthy ambassadors of Niger State throughout their training and future careers.
As part of the state's support for medical education, Governor Bago announced a financial grant of ₦2 million each to the 41 students. He also donated an 18-seater bus to facilitate transportation between their accommodation and lecture venues.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, Dr. Ibrahim Ahmed Dangana, who represented the Commissioner for Secondary and Tertiary Health, Dr. Murtala Bagana, commended the governor for his commitment to the development of the health sector and medical education in the state.
On behalf of the students, the pioneer President of the IBBU Lapai Medical Students Association, Jamilu Mikhail, expressed appreciation to the governor for supporting the establishment and growth of medical education at the university.
He noted that the governor's intervention had provided encouragement and opportunities for aspiring medical professionals from the state. He also assured the governor that the students would return to contribute to healthcare delivery in Niger State upon completing their studies.
